IS SOLANGE'S NEW ALBUM A FLOP
By Industryfinest
09/02/08

After a media blitz that has lasted what seems like forever, the end result of her fathers' "hard work" is that Solange has once again proven that Beyonce' is the only mega-star that Matthew Knowles will ever manage.

Hits Daily Double is reporting that Solange's album won't even crack the top ten (some reports even suggest that she probably won't sell 20,000 albums) honestly, Solange irks me a little bit, but I want to see her do well and since I can't really comment on the album because I haven't bought it, I'll leave that to the "experts".

I guess if she really plans to be an "underground" artist as she's said before, then these type of numbers shouldn't really discourage her much. However, I don't believe that anybody gets into the record business to barely be recognized - it just doesn't make much sense.

What I think Solange should really do with her next album is stop lying to herself and most importantly, stop lying to the people. Everybody knows that she wants nothing more than to be as big as her sister. Name one person in, or trying to get into the music industry who doesn't and if they tell you that they don't want global fame (and fortune) they're lying through their teeth.

We've all come to know that Matthew Knowles' strategy for trying different things with the acts he manages is prefaced with a ridiculous press release,
"I've always wanted to try something different."
Kelly did it with her first project which was sort of a pop, meets rock, meets r&b album, and then she went straight hood on the second with songs like "Ghetto". Michelle did it with her first album; a successful gospel offering by most standards. ("Gospel has always been my first love.") yet, she went right back to R&B after the success of that album.

Of course, Solange tried to capitalize on the innocence of young girls on her first "interesting", yet hard to categorize album, and now with the success of Estelle, Amy Winehouse and a few others who have brought the 60's and 70's back to mainstream, suddenly, Solo has an "interest" there too? I'm not buying it!

I honestly believe that Solange is an R&B girl at heart and that's what she should stick too. Embrace the fact that the only reason any one is interested in you in the first place is because they're interested in your sister, and then use that interest to capture and hold the attention of the doubtful.

Listening to a few of her new tracks, I honestly believe that she has the talent (her voice has come a long way) so, use some of those industry connections to make some good music and leave the attitude at home!

Janet didn't mind being compared to Michael - but she had proven herself first, so by the time she demanded to be known as "Janet", there was nothing anyone could do about it because by then, Michael was well on his way to being "Janet Jackson's brother".

I'm still going to buy Solange's album, but I hope this serves as a lesson to her - you can't ride the horse and walk it at the same time. Find a lane that works for you and stay there.
