Motorists Scramble For Money Tossed By Fleeing Suspects
Two drug suspects led San Diego police on a high-speed chase
during Thursday's after-work commute, at times flinging money from the
windows of their pickup, police said.
The chase began south of
downtown San Diego and covered surface streets and freeways, finally
ending on northbound Interstate 5 near Del Mar when the truck ran over
a spike strip.
The two were arrested at gunpoint. Police
gathered more than $17,000 in bills spread over several miles as
commuters gawked in amazement.
No one was hurt during the
45-minute drama, but traffic was snarled during the chase and arrest.
Several commuters stopped their vehicles on the freeway and grabbed
some of the bills, officials said.
The pursuit moved from
highway to highway across the county. News crews following the pursuit
spotted other drivers pulling to the side of Interstate 805 to pick up
the money being tossed from the suspect's truck.
"People were jumping the median and stuffing dollar bills in their shirts," according to Cal Walker with KOGO traffic.
Finally,
officers stopped the black Ford F-150 truck on northbound Interstate 5
in Del Mar Heights just before 5:30 p.m. Patrol cars shut down traffic
heading north on I-5 while officers took the driver into custody and
searched the car with a K-9 unit.

The
chase started as a narcotics stop according to the CHP. The San Diego
