Breaking: Mr. Magic of "Rap Attack" Dead of Heart Attack!
By Hip Hop News
10/02/09

Oct 2, 2009

Legendary DJ and radio host Mr. Magic died of a heart attack.

Magic is known as the creator of the mixshow Mr. Magic's Rap Attack, which featured DJ Marley Marl and Tyrone "Fly Ty" Williams as the show's co-producers. Magic was also known as a central figure in the "Bridge Wars" of the mid '80s. He had an ongoing feud with Red Alert, who was on a competing Hip-Hop show on another NYC radio station.

Mr. Magic, born John Rivas, was also a co-founder of the legendary Hip-Hop collective The Juice Crew, which featured Biz Markie, Roxanne Shante, Marley Marl, MC Shan, Craig G., Kool G. Rap and Masta Ace. Red Alert was aligned with KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions.

"He paved the way for all radio stations that ever did mix shows," DJ Premier said via his blog. "Also sparked the career of Boogie Down Productions due to the diss he showed when they came to shop their demo to him and was turned away which then sparked South Bronx and The Bridge Is Over."

On Nas debut single, Halftime, Mr. Magic spits the line, "I miss Mr. Magic," and he has also been mentioned by The Notorious B.I.G on the single Juicy wit the line, "Every Saturday - Rap Attack - Mr. Magic Marley Marl". Even Tupac Shakur mentioned Mr. Magic on the song Thug Style from his posthumous release R U Still Down?. Mr. Magic is also credited with helping to jump start the career of BDP, by dissing KRS-One, which in turn inspired BDP to record the classic diss songs South Bronx and The Bridge Is Over.

Mr. Magic is a legend and a true Hip-Hop pioneer and he will be sorely missed. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
